Environmental protection is one of the three pillars of sustainability. The other two are social equity and economic viability. Together, they provide the framework for implementing solutions aimed at creating a better world.<\/p>\n\n
We can represent the concept using a Venn diagram, with each pillar represented by a circle, and what the systems should aim for is the centre of these circles: the point where the three intersect and overlap.<\/p>\n\n
Each pillar is a distinct regime, with its own objectives. For example, in the environmental pillar, targets may include habitat conservation, pollution reduction, and improvements in air quality. Socially, protecting human health, improving people’s education and ensuring access to basic resources such as water. In economic terms, creating jobs, reducing costs and achieving profit.<\/p>\n\n
A system that pursues and maximises all these objectives simultaneously \u2013 protecting the environment, improving social issues and reaping economic benefits \u2013 is considered sustainable. When one of the three pillars is weak, it compromises all the others.<\/p>\n\n
